Bill Mead
Though Bill Mead, of the
South Carolina Lowcountry, began drawing as a teenager, experimenting for
years with dark erotic images, he later became interested in painting
landscapes. In 2004, while manning a roadside vegetable stand, he painted a
sign “Watermelon $3” to attract passers-by. The sign looked plain so he
added grass and sky, and propped it against the stand. The next day, an
antique dealer offered him $10 for the sign; so he painted another and she
bought it too. A month later, he couldn’t paint fast them enough, and the
next year, he left his construction job to paint full time. Today, his
technical accuracy, imagination and humor have made him popular in South
Carolina galleries. Mead attended the Maryland Institute College of Art and
the Atlanta College of Art, though he calls himself a self-taught artist.
